Joint seals are mainly used for elements made of waterproof concrete in accordance with the DAfStb guideline on waterproof concrete structures to seal the joint against soil moisture as well as pressurised and non-pressurised water in areas in contact with soil.

In reinforced concrete construction, joint seals are used to seal construction, control and expansion joints. Furthermore, joint seals can also be used for joints and connections between waterproof concrete systems or elements (e.g. basement light shafts) and surface seals (e.g. PMBC/membranes) of exterior elements in contact with soil.

There are internal and external joint sealing systems with different design principles (e.g. swelling, clamping, adhesion, binding, injection).

Regulatory framework

Joint seals that are not already covered by DIN 18533, DIN 18197 in conjunction with DIN 18541 or DIN 7865 are subject to a national technical test certificate (abP), cf. MVV TB, Section C 3. National technical test certificates are issued by testing laboratories officially recognised for this purpose, as listed in the Directory of recognised testing laboratories, inspection and certification bodies (PÜZ-Verzeichnis see column on the right). The testing laboratories also carry out the corresponding testing and external surveillance. Please submit your application directly to a qualified testing laboratory.

As a European Technical Assessment Body, DIBt can also issue European Technical Assessments (ETAs) for joint sealing products based on European Assessment Documents (EADs) still to be developed or already existing, such as

• EAD 320002-xx-0605 Coated metal water stop sheet for construction and controlled crack joints in waterproof concrete
• EAD 320008-xx-0605 Swellable joint sealing tape on the basis of different materials for construction joints in watertight concrete
• EAD 320014-xx-0605 Joint sealing profile made of EPDM for the sealing of joints in tubbing constructions
