Other types of external thermal insulation composite systems (ETICS)
External thermal insulation composite systems, or ETICS for short, are multi-layer systems used to insulate the external wall of a building. They consist of insulation boards bonded to the substrate using adhesive mortar and additionally fixed with mechanical fixings (anchors, profiles etc.) and a rendering system comprised of a reinforced base coat and a decorative finishing coat.
The ETICS described here differ from the other ETICS categories presented. One common type is systems for improving the energy performance of an already existing ETICS on mineral substrates (retrofitting). These are always mechanically fixed and additionally bonded to the substrate. Insulation products made of expanded polystyrene (EPS) and mineral wool can be used.
If expanded polystyrene is used as an insulation product, special constructive fire protection measures need to be observed.
Regulatory framework
In this work area, DIBt grants national technical approvals (abZ) and/or general construction technique permits (aBG).
National procedure
A national technical approval (abZ) and/or oder general construction technique permit (aBG) is granted upon application (see Model Building Code (MBO), Sections 16a(2) and18(2) and (4)). This also applies to amendments and supplements to, or renewals of existing approvals and/or construction technique permits.
No formal requirements apply. The following information is needed: name and address of the applicant, description of the product and/or construction technique and its field of use or application, type of decision required (new decision, amendment or supplement to, or renewal of, an existing decision).
