Linearly supported glazing

With linearly supported glazing, the glass panes are continuously fixed via a linear mechanical glass support (e.g. profile) with a glass insertion depth. The glazing system is installed in such a manner that no constraint arises taking into consideration practical construction tolerances. Contact with hard components or other glass panes must be avoided. Linearly supported glazing is used in facades, in roofs, as canopies, as internal partitions or for photovoltaic systems.

Differentiation is made between vertical and horizontal glazing depending on the installation position. Glazing with an angle of inclination of 10° maximum with respect to the vertical plane is referred to as vertical glazing. Horizontal glazing is understood to be glazing with an angle of inclination of more than 10° with respect to the vertical plane.

Glass products requiring verification are primarily special glass products such as:

  • Curved glass: Curved glass is curved (deformed) in a hot bending process. The simplest form is a cylinder. Spherically curved constructions are very rare and are not yet covered by the existing technical specifications.
  • Other special glass products: The compositions of glass products can deviate from the harmonised European product standards (e.g. EN 572-9). An example of this is 'special drawn sheet glass'.

Regulatory framework

Linearly supported glazing is executed in accordance with DIN 18008-2. For construction techniques which deviate significantly from these provisions, DIBt grants general construction technique permits (aBG). For products used in the construction technique which are not covered by harmonised European standards, DIBt grants national technical approvals (abZ). European Technical Assessments (ETAs) can also be issued for these products.

The document  "Technische Regeln für die Verwendung von linienförmig gelagerten Verglasungen (TRLV) –  August 2006" has been replaced by DIN 18008 Part 2.

A national technical approval (abZ) and/or oder general construction technique permit (aBG) is granted upon application (see Model Building Code (MBO), Sections 16a(2) and18(2) and (4)). This also applies to amendments and supplements to, or renewals of existing approvals and/or construction technique permits.

No formal requirements apply. The following information is needed: name and address of the applicant, description of the product and/or construction technique and its field of use or application, type of decision required (new decision, amendment or supplement to, or renewal of, an existing decision).

European Technical Assessment (ETA)

To start the ETA procedure, please submit the form below. We will then check if the prerequisites for issuing an ETA are met, i.e., in particular, if the product is not fully covered by an existing harmonised standard. If the prerequisites are met, we will check whether a European Assessment Document (EAD) covering the requested assessment scope already exists or still needs to be developed. If an EAD needs to be developed or amended, a complete technical file needs to be established before the procedure can begin.
