Modular scaffolds are scaffolds in which standards, ledgers and diagonal braces are connected through special connections made of multiple components, called module nodes. Working scaffolds in accordance with DIN EN 12811-1, service scaffolds in accordance with DIN 4420-1, falsework in accordance with DIN EN 12812 or other temporary works equipment can be designed as modular systems..

Falsework in accordance with DIN EN 12812 is generally used to support the loads of fresh concrete until the structure itself has sufficient load-bearing capacity. It is also used for supporting loads from components, systems or equipment arising temporarily due to the construction, maintenance, alteration or removal of buildings or other structural works. Furthermore, falsework serves as a supporting structure for temporary storage of building products, components and equipment.

Other scaffold components include, for example:

• scaffold components comprising special connections;
• scaffold components using special materials;
• scaffold components for special applications.

Regulatory framework

Scaffolds and scaffold components are temporary works equipment. These products therefore do not fall under the Construction Products Regulation (Regulation (EU) No 305/2011). In Germany (with the exception of Bavaria), scaffolds are considered to be structural works in accordance with the Building Codes of the federal states (Landesbauordnungen).

DIBt grants national technical approvals (abZ) for corresponding products and/or general construction technique permits (aBG) for applications where they significantly deviate from the applicable Technical Building Rules, cf. in particular MVV TB, Sections A 1.2.8 and C 2.16. This concerns, e.g.,

• scaffold components, even if manufactured in accordance with MVV TB, Section C 2.16.7, or connectors for temporary modular systems for which design assisted by testing is used to come to a more economical design solution or
• scaffold components that are manufactured in accordance with MVV TB, Section C 2.16.15, but for which use is restricted to specific scaffolding systems in the product manual.
